Railway Administration (2 Halytska St.)
The Austrian Railway Directorate in Stanislaviv was the third and the last administrative building located at those times in Galicia. The building was situated on the Independence Street (former Potocki Sq.), and its front faced Halytska Street (former Karpinskoho Str.). Construction works were carried out in an extremely short period, from July 3, 1893 to July 1, 1894, in other words, they took 363 days. Magnificent four-story Directorate was built according to the project of the Viennese architect Ernest Baudish. Lviv engineer and architect Yan Tomas Kudelsky was appointed to supervise building works. The facade decorations were made by Piotr Gerasymovych and Stanislav Levandovskyi from Lviv, interior paintings – by Reikhel and Pelts, also from Lviv. The first director was Liudvik Vezhbytskyi
The Bank of Stanislaviv Land and numerous stores were located on the ground floor. The building was the city property, and the Railways Directorate only rented it until a new one was built.
The story of choosing the city by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy is also worth mentioning. At the end of the 19th century, the Railroad network in Galicia grew so fast that there was a need for the regional directorate. But then there were Directorates only in Lviv and Krakow. Four cities took part in the competition including Chernivtsi, Przemysl, Kolomyia and Stanislaviv. And our city gained a convincing victory. German workers were invited to construct the railroad and eventually they established a German settlement here in Stanislaviv.
In 1914, the city council was located in this building. In 1921-35 there was also the administration of Stanisławiw Voivodeship, but in 1935-39 it was replaced by the treasury. In 1945, Stanislaviv State Medical Institute was opened in the city and the building became its central campus. Since 2008, the institution bears the name of Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University. The building became an architectural landmark.
Over the entire history of the University, more than 16,000 doctors have graduated from it and 5,000 of them are working in the region. The young people from more than 40 countries of the world, including Canada, Poland, Palestine, India, Turkey, Denmark, USA, Australia, Germany, Mauritius, Lithuania, the countries of the former CIS, more than 5 countries of Africa …, choose a Medical University and study various medical specialities.
