The oldest pharmacy in Stanislaviv (2 Sheremeta St.)
At the times of the Commonwealth of Poland (Rzecz Pospolita), residents of Stanislaviv bought
medicines at private pharmacists. There was also a pharmacy owned by the Jesuits. However, it is not
known whether it was for general use or for monks only.
The first classical pharmacy was opened in the Austrian period in 1777 and was called “Under the
Anchor." Actually, such information is given in the advertisements of the local newspaper
Stanyslavivskyi Courier, owned by Alfred Bail. Although in the 18th century it didn’t belong to him
and was in a completely different location.
Nearly 30 years ago, many charred bones were found in the foundation of this house. Then, doctors,
archaeologists, and police (for safety reasons), were called to examine the site. Experts found out
that those bones belonged to pet animals. But who and for what reason did kill them? Finally, it
turned out, that it weren’t any illegal activities, but it was the responsibility of pharmacists. The truth
is that once on that place was the oldest Stanislaviv pharmacy. And in those days in pharmacies,
medicines were not only sold but also made. And doctors needed animal bones for producing
activated charcoal.
The old names of the pharmaceutical establishments in Galicia usually began with "Under …". For
example, "Under the stars, angels, eagles".
