“Sacred place where Polish blood was shed for the freedom of Homeland. Here, on August 3rd 1944 the Nazis executed about 20 people”
On the first days of the Uprising some of the most important places at Powiśle are attacked. Long before the outbreak General “Monter” divides Warsaw into 7 districts. Each of them has an organisational structure and military objectives. The 1st district included Śródmieście and the Old Town. One of the most important aims at Powiśle is to take over the Power Plant, which is Warsaw’s main electricity supplier. After harsh battles in the very first hours of the Uprising the building is finally conquered. It is an enormous success of the Polish Underground Home Army (AK) soldiers. Due to this, the whole city has an access to the electricity till the beginning of September. Nevertheless, with each hour of the Uprising the enemy troops perform a numerous assassinations on civilians. On the 3rd of August, several dozens of soldiers from the Polish Underground Home Army’s group “Konrad” are killed. They are executed under the Poniatowski Bridge. Another 20 citizens are killed at Dobra 96 Street. Yet, this is just a beginning of the extermination of civilians. Every day the Nazis perform an increasingly cruel acts of murder.
