Memorial Stone of General Anders’s Battalion “Wigry” (under the Muranów cinema)
“Wigry” was a conspiratorial military organization created in October 1939 in Warsaw by former ZHP (Polish Scouting Association) instructors. Its purpose was to prepare for armed struggle with the German occupant. The name of the organization refers to the place of the pre-war camps of the Warsaw scout teams at the Wigry Lake. In May 1941 the “Wigry” was subordinated to the Armed Struggle Union (Związek Walki Zbrojnej) – Home Army (Armia Krajowa). Throughout the period of the conspiracy, the organization was active in parallel with other scout organizations, and since 1944 has been associated with the Gray Ranks (Szare Szeregi). Led by Edward Konopacki pseudonym “Trzaska” and the 400-person battalion “Wigry” took part in the Warsaw Uprising.
The square was given the name in October 1995, and the stone was unveiled two years later to commemorate the soldiers of the battalion of the Scout Home Army “Wigry” who gave up their lives in the conspiracy and during the Warsaw Uprising. The choice of place was not accidental. The square and stone are located in the area of battalion battles. Here at night, on August 15th 1944 the soldiers of battalion briefly recovered the Mostowski Palace from the Germans.
