Jerzy Gawin’s memorial stone

Jerzy Gawin nickname ‘Sword’, ‘Elephant’- scoutmaster, member of Szare Szeregi (Grey Ranks). Active in conspiracy from  1939/1940. He attended to the 3rd mans junior high school Hugona Kołłątaja at Śniadeckich Street, where he studied with his other friends from the Grey Rankes (Szare Szeregi)- Konrad Okolski, Felix Pendelski and Kazimierx Łodziński. In 1942 he graduated first class of he Cadet School of the Infantry Reserve ‘Agricola’ and received a nickname ‘Sword’. He took part in many military actions- in the Celestynow, under the Rogorzela, under the Rogoźno and in famous action under the Arsenal as a result of which Jan Bytnar ‘Rudy’ and 20 other prisoners were rescued. For this action Jerzy Gawin was awarded with Cross of the Valiant (Krzyż Walecznych). ‘The Elephant’ was awarded with the Cross of the Valiant three times, he got killed on September 23th 1944 during the evacutation  from Czerniaków with the remains of his troop.
