“Sacred place where Polish blood was shed for the freedom of Homeland. Here, on August 29th 1944 the Nazis committed murder on civilians”
One of the most inhumane crimes committed by the German soldiers was abolishing the city asylums. The Old Town, occupied by the Nazis, was the area where the arsons, rapes and murders were the every-day reality. August 29th 1944 was the 10th day of German assault on the Old Town. At that day the executioners took over the Holly Spirit and Virgin Mary women’s health care center fostered by Charity Sisters at Przyrynek 4 Street. Those who were too infirm to leave the building on their own were killed from the grenade explosion, which was dropped into the chapel situated in the basement of the building. Some of the inmates were executed at the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Others were hauled to Pfeiffer charnel house at Okopowa Street. This place became the main spot of executing injured, infirmed or disabled people. Further executions were performed at Zakroczymska and Franciszkańska Streets.
