Memorial Stone of the Battalion “Miłosz” (Konopnicka Street, the corner of B. Prus Street)
The boulder with bronze plaque commemorates the combat actions of soldiers of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) of battalion “Milosz” during the Warsaw Uprising. This commemoration was made thanks to the efforts of the legendary Kazimierz Leski pseudonym “Bradl” in 1991. A few years later in 1997 also the square itself was given the name of the Home Army battalion “Milosz”.
The battalion “Milosz” was formed from over a dozen Lieutenant Kazimierz Leski’s battle squad. It was fully organized in late August 1944. The battalion commander was Major Stefan Jastrzębski pseudonym “Milosz”. He fought in the city centre in the area of the Three Crosses Square (Plac Trzech Krzyży) and Aleje Jerozolimskie Street. He conquered the building of Queen Jadwiga’s Gymnasium and the building of St. Lazarus (Św. Łazarza) Hospital. Thanks to the volunteers, about 1000 soldiers were involved. Among the accomplishments of the soldiers of the battalion “Miłosz” one should be mentioned. Getting the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) building at Konopnicka Street 6, which remained in the hands of the insurgents until the end of the fighting.
