Memorial Stone of the Battalion “Gozdawa” (Konwiktorska Street, the corner of Zakroczymska Street)

In this place, on August 2nd 1944, the soldiers of “Gozdawa” under the command of “Ognisty” took part in the conquering of the Polish Securities Company (Polska Wytwórnia Papierów Wartościowych).

The battalion “Gozdawa” was a squad of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), which dates back to October 1939. Underground squads were set up in the military hospital of the former Sanitary Training Centre and in Praga district in the Municipal Slaughterhouse. The name of the battalion comes from Captain Lucjan Giżyński’s peudonym, who took over his command in the spring of 1943. After the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the battalion fought in the Old Town and from September – in the city centre.
