Statue of the Czerniaków Rebelians and Soldiers of the First Polish Army
Designed by Tadeusz Antoszczak- statue of the Home Army soldiers from the group ”Kryska” Peasant Army (Armia Ludowa) from the Czerniaków area of the Ist Polish Army. It commemorates people who died fighting during the Warsaw Uprising at Czerniaków. Military group under command of captain Zygmunt Netzler “Kryska” was created during the Uprising at Czerniaków. It was formed of many other Uprising troops fighting in this area from the ‘W’ hour. When the fight for Czerniaków began on September 10th, the terrain previously taken by insurgents started to shrink day after day. From 11th till 13th of September, the group fought in a bloody battle for Bridgehead of Czerniaków. Though the group received help from the Ist Polish Army Landing Troops (also called ‘Berlingowcy’) coming from the Praga’s edge, it could not hold its position. Part of “Kryska’s” soldiers evacuated through canals to Mokotów, other part made it to get to the other side of the river. In front of the ‘Społem’ storehouses germans hanged several dozens soldiers from group “Kryska”. One of the victims was also priest Józef Stanek “Rudy”. At the area of paint factory Germans executed (by hanging) soldiers and nurses from troops ‘Zośka’ and ‘Parasol’. For many Battle for Czerniaków was a teritory that may be compared to the biggest city fights that happened during 2nd World War. Germans tortured men and hanged women. They took out bodies of killed people from buildings and piled them into huge stacks.
