ul. Nowy Zjazd 1
“Sacred place were Polish blood was shed for the freedom of Homeland. Here, in August 1944, the Nazis executed 15 people”
In the very first days of the Warsaw Uprising the Polish Underground Home Army succeeded to recapture the building of the Polish Teachers’ Union (Związek Nauczycielska Polskiego) and the Power Plant in Powiśle district. However, the Średnicowy Bridge and Poniatowski Bridge, both of which had a crucial strategic meaning, remained in the hands of the enemy. On August 2nd, the Nazis started to extirpate people from Śródmieście performing arsons, murders, and rapes. Nowy Zjazd Street and it’s neighborhood occupied by the Nazis became places of public executions. Between the 3rd and 5th of August the residents of Professors’ House at Nowy Zjazd 5 Street were ousted. During those days 15 men were executed, among which were the University of Warsaw professors.
Eugeniusz Wajgel – a doctor, veterinarian, professor of ophthalmology and surgeon;
Andrzej Tretiak – a philologist and English literature historian;
Wacław Roszkowski – a zoologist;
Józef Rafacz – a law historian.
At Nowy Zjazd 1 Street were situated offices of Schicht factory, which produced popular at that time washing powder Radion. The building had first in Poland neon sign and became known as a “Schicht House.”
