Old-Town fortifications
„Sacred place where Polish blond was shed for the freedom of Homeland. Here, on September 2nd 1944 the Nazis executed 30 people”
In the course of the Old Town’s defence 7000 soldiers of the Polish Underground Home Army (AK) got killed, which comprised 40% of soldier’s loss in Warsaw Uprising. The daily number of soldiers killed on the German side was 150, whereas on the insurgent side 220. After the fall of the Old Town the Nazi divisions took over the area. They captured the patients of field hospitals and conducted mass murders on them. Only on September 2nd, the SS together with collaborationist formations killed nearly 1300 people including the 300 injured executed in Central Insurgent Surgical Hospital, situated at that time in the Ministry of Justice at Długa 7 Street.
The plaque at the internal wall near the Wąski Dunaj Street is dedicated to the Poles who died fighting for the freedom of their homeland on September 2nd 1944. That day the Nazis killed nearly 70 people. Due to the situation report of one of the Polish Underground Home Army commander, we could now learn that this heroic defense of the Old Town became legendary. The fall of the Old Town was the loss of one of the most important bastions, since it provided a serious breach in Warsaw’s defence mechanism.
